Chapter Twenty-Two

“Mick left early,” Neve observed the next morning as they cleaned up the kitchen. “Darius said he’s usually the last one to leave a party.”

“Yes, well, he obviously had better things to do,” Marie-Claire replied tersely as she sorted bottles into recycling bins. “Darius left early, as well.”

“They have a match this afternoon. He said he needed some rest.”

Raul returned from taking the garbage out. “There’s a chap in the foyer. I found him on the street, he says he’s here for you, MC.”

Neve followed Marie-Claire to investigate. A clean-cut young man wearing a suit and tie stood in the small hall, jingling a set of car keys.

“My name is Phillip Trent, and I am from the Kingsbury Town Football Club,” he explained. “I am here to escort you to the match this afternoon.”

Marie-Claire looked at Neve in confusion. “I’m not going to the match this afternoon.”

“Mick Carr said I am to escort you, and Miss Clark if she’d like to accompany you, to the match this afternoon at one o’clock. So, if you would be so good as to get your coats—”

“I said I’m not going to the match,” she repeated.

“Look, miss.” Phillip winked. “Mick said you might balk. But he gave me liberty to tell you that I am, like yourself, attending college and the fifty-quid tip he’s going to give me for delivering the both of you to the grounds this afternoon will go a long way towards fees.”

“Is that true?”

“The London School of Economics isn’t free, miss.”

“We’ll just get changed and be right down,” Neve said and ushered Marie-Claire up the staircase.

“Neve, this is not a good idea,” Marie-Claire told her once they had reached the top.

“’Course it is! The lads are treating us to a match. It will be a hoot.”

“No, really, it’s not.”

Neve paused. “Why? Did something happen between you and Mick last night?”

Marie-Claire hesitated, uncomfortable to divulge how things ended between them. “I don’t know. I mean, I thought things were going great. We came up here to my bedroom, and then things weren’t so great.”

“How so?”

Marie-Claire bit her lip, uncertain how to describe what happened. “All of a sudden, he just stopped.”

“Stopped? You mean in the middle of—”

“It didn’t get that far, but far enough.”

“Did he say why he stopped?”

Marie-Claire looped a lock of hair behind her ear. “It turns out he’s not interested in me.”

“Is that what he said?” Neve asked. “That he wasn’t interested in you?”

“Not exactly. He said he didn’t want that with me.”

“Did he say why?”

“He said it was because it was different with me.”

Neve’s eyes widened. “Really.”

“But that doesn’t make any sense, Neve. How am I different? I know I’m not as glamorous as his other girlfriends, but I thought that didn’t matter to him. And I was trying to be more like them, you know—wild and adventurous—but when I did, he ran out. I don’t know what’s going on, and I have no idea why he sent someone to take us to the match today.”

Neve considered this information as Phillip’s voice called up the stairs.
